A stochastic scheduling algorithm for precedence constrained tasks on Grid

چکیده
This paper addresses the problems in scheduling a precedence constrained tasks of parallel application with random tasks processing time and edges communication time on Grid computing systems so as to minimize the makespan in stochastic environment. This is a difficult problem and few efforts have been reported on its solution in the literature. The problem is first formulated in a form of stochastic scheduling model on Grid systems. Then, a stochastic heterogeneous earliest finish time (SHEFT) scheduling algorithm is developed that incorporates the expected value and variance of stochastic processing time into scheduling. Our rigorous performance evaluation study, based on randomly generated stochastic parallel application DAG graphs, shows that our proposed SHEFT scheduling algorithm performs much better than the existing scheduling algorithms in terms of makespan, speedup, and makespan standard

متن کاملAn improved genetic algorithm for multidimensional optimization of precedence-constrained production planning and scheduling
Integration of production planning and scheduling is a class of problems commonly found in manufacturing industry. This class of problems associated with precedence constraint has been previously modeled and optimized by the authors, in which, it requires a multidimensional optimization at the same time: what to make, how many to make, where to make and the order to make. It is a combinatorial,...
متن کاملNear-Optimal Dynamic Task Scheduling of Precedence Constrained Coarse-Grained Tasks onto a Computational Grid
The most common objective function of task scheduling problems is makespan. However, on a computational grid, the 2nd optimal makespan may be much longer than the optimal makespan because the speed of each processor of a grid varies over time. So, if the performance measure is makespan, there is no approximation algorithm in general for scheduling onto a grid. In contrast, recently the authors ...
متن کاملModified Pareto archived evolution strategy for the multi-skill project scheduling problem with generalized precedence relations
In this research, we study the multi-skill resource-constrained project scheduling problem, where there are generalized precedence relations between project activities. Workforces are able to perform one or several skills, and their efficiency improves by repeating their skills. For this problem, a mathematical formulation has been proposed that aims to optimize project completion time, reworki...
متن کاملA multi-objective resource-constrained project scheduling problem with time lags and fuzzy activity durations
The resource-constrained project scheduling problem is to find a schedule that minimizes the project duration subject to precedence relations and resource constraints. To further account for economic aspects of the project, one may add an objective of cash nature to the problem. In addition, dynamic nature and variations in real world are known to introduce uncertainties into data. Therefore, t...
